Meet Tart’s Chef Nick!

Originally from the bustling metropolis of Riverton Wyoming, Chef Nick Erven now leads the Kitchen at Tart Restaurant at the Farmers Daughter Hotel.  Chef Erven cut his teeth at restaurants throughout Los Angeles and Portland including Bin 8945, Biggs, The Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel and most recently as the Executive Chef of Mess Hall in Los Feliz.
Drawing inspiration from the popular southern restaurant concept of a “meat and three,” Chef Erven cooks the kind of food that his grandma would cook if she had access to the farmers market on a daily basis. Dishes like pan roasted pork chop with thick brown butter and crispy sage are the kind of home style cooking that Tart is known for. Sides on a typical night might include deep fried Brussels sprouts tossed in a chili vinaigrette or roasted okra with pine nuts, capers and tomato.
The popular brunch menu has received a facelift as well.  Fan favorite egg dishes remain but now share space with a strong list sandwich offerings perfect for business lunches or an afternoon snack. New items, like the meatloaf sandwich with Russian dressing, heirloom tomato and grilled sourdough as well as the fried chicken sandwich with an eggy gribbiche sauce, house pickled onions and watercress have become instant favorites.
Chef Erven has not forgotten about the sweet tooth either. With the summer heat on the rise, it is the season for light crisp desserts. The buttermilk panna cotta with stewed rhubarb, strawberries and a shortbread cookie is the perfect dessert for sitting on the patio with a cold glass of rose. If  something more substantial is your flavor, perhaps the pecan-brown butter tart with blackberries and whipped crème friache will satiate your sweet craving.

Farmer’s Daughter Hotel has teamed up with LA and Nashville based band Ladies Gun Club to create a unique video around their latest single, “Road to Nowhere”.

The sound of Ladies Gun Club, and their cover of “Road to Nowhere” by Talking Heads, were a natural compliment to the down home flavor that Farmer’s Daughter offers their guests. Located in the heart of Los Angeles, Farmer’s Daughter Hotel has made it a point to connect with pop culture and music through their collaborations with Coachella and The World Famous KROQ, as well as many local businesses and charities that cater to the arts. Anyone who visits the hotel can tell the vibe is one of a kind, which is why artists and musicians, as well as families and friends, find the location so inviting.

Ladies Gun Club, not so coincidentally, are two of the South’s finest grassroots singers that made it all the way to Hollywood before finding each other. Soon after meeting, they borrowed the name Ladies Gun Club from an actual ladies’ gun club in North Carolina and, happily for all us displaced Southerners, commenced to makin’ bona fide roots music in the midst of Tinseltown.

For everyone who follows us on Facebook ( and Twitter ( you’ll recognize the lending library we shared last month. We discovered the lending library at Farmer’s Daughter Hotel ( on our way to lunch. It’s rare to see businesses sharing resources so we  decided to talk to Farmer’s Daughter and see if they have any other sharing projects. I reached out to the manager Peter Picataggio and he wanted us to come to the hotel and speak with him personally.

What is your greatest influence in life?

Traveling and doing what the locals do.

If you had one superhuman power what would it be?

To have true unconditional love towards every single being.

How do you define success?

Maintaining ease in anything you do or try to accomplish.

How do you define magic?

Unexpected delight

What is the last thing that made you giggle like a schoolgirl?

When Brian said in excitement after my friend did some rearranging, ‘That room divider just feng shui-ed across the floor’.  That use of ‘feng shui’ just cracked me up! I think I may start using it.

How do you feel when you’re at Farmer’s Daughter?

Like I stepped out of crazy city life and discovered an oasis of ‘unexpected delight’!
